(27). CONCEPTION OF THE CHURCH
CONCEPTION OF THE CHURCH
When and where did
the Church actually begin? The Day of Pentecost marked the beginning of
the Church seems evident for the following reasons:
The Lord spoke of
the church as being future: ...and upon this rock I will build my
church... Matthew 16:18b. This apparently means that the church did not
exist in Old Testament times.
The Gospel of
Jesus Christ is essential to the functioning of the church. It is built
on the Gospel for a very important reason: by the Gospel (or because of
the Gospel), Jesus Christ ascended back to the Father which was necessary for
the sending of the Holy Ghost: Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is
expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not
come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. John 16:7.
This had to happen in
order to baptize believers into the body of Christ which allows the exercise of
the gifts for the proclamation of the Gospel. The church being built on
the Gospel (which provided for the ascension of Christ that we would be indwelt
by the Holy Ghost) makes it distinctive to this age.
The principal evidence
that the Church began on the day of Pentecost in Jerusalem, concerns the
baptizing work of the Holy Spirit. The Lord declared that this particular
and distinctive ministry of the Spirit was still future just before His
ascension: For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be
baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. Acts 1:5.
Since this work of the Holy Spirit first occurred on the day of Pentecost, then the conclusion seems obvious that the church, the body of Christ, began on the day of Pentecost.

Consummation of The Church
Everyone likes a story that has a
happy ending. The story of the Church has such a happy ending! The
Bridegroom gets the Bride and together they live happily ever after! The
glorious destiny of the Church is as follows:
- To be caught up by the Bridegroom at
the Rapture - 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18.-
- To be examined and rewarded at the
Judgment Seat of Christ - 1 Corinthians 3:13.
- To be wedded to Christ at the
marriage service of the Lamb - Revelation 19:7-8.
- To be seated with Christ at the
marriage supper of the Lamb - Revelation 19:9.
- To reign with Christ during the
Millennium - Rev 1:6; 3:21.
- To share the New Jerusalem with
Christ throughout all eternity - Revelation 21:1,2.
- To illustrate the glory of Christ
throughout all eternity - Ephesians 1:6,12; 2:1-7; 3:10.
It is a joy for believers to
experience the blessed necessity of serving Christ in a local New Testament
Church! Support the Church with your prayers and giving of your
self for the furtherance of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Don't just go to church, go
with the Church for the glory of God.
